Holiday Party Survival
This is the time of year when the chocolate flows like a river and the baked goods pile up faster than a New England snow storm. Every break room is filled to the brink with goodies and savory treats that are most certainly hard to pass up. It’s no wonder that many of us feel heavier after the parties and gatherings are over. In fact, holiday weight gain is a real thing. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that people in 3 different countries including the United States actually gain pounds during this time of year and it can take up to 5 months to lose the excess weight. However, you do not have to be a statistic this time of year. By implementing a few simple strategies, you can maintain or even lose weight over the holidays. It’s possible! Advanced Weight Loss and Surgical Institute knows that many of our Brevard County clients often fear the Christmas season because they are afraid of losing weight loss momentum. Take heart, you don’t have to gain weight this season. Here’s how:
Don’t Show Up Hungry
Let’s face the facts. It feels like there is something delicious to eat everywhere you turn, especially around the holiday season. When you know you have a soirée to attend, be sure to eat before you go. If you show up satiated, you are less likely to overindulge. This doesn’t mean you have to skip the goodies all together, just be mindful of what you are choosing.
Skip the Alcohol
Eggnog, cocktails, wine, and beer all have calories that can add up quickly. If you decide to have a drink, try employing a one or two drink maximum and don’t indulge during the week. We aren’t saying you cannot enjoy an adult beverage, just set limits and don’t exceed them. Another thing to consider is that the more you drink the easier it is to let your commitment to avoid overeating slide. A few cocktails in, everything looks delicious making it more likely that you will eat too much as well.
Get Moving
The holidays are a busy time for just about everyone so be sure to set aside time to exercise each day. Maybe now is not the best time to start a new workout regimen but staying active will help you mentally and physically. It will also help you deal with any holiday stress you may be experiencing.
Choose Wisely
With all the choices at a holiday party, there are bound to be things you love and things you aren’t too crazy about. Choose the foods that you like best and stay away from others. While you are at it, pick a smaller plate. This will give the illusion of more and help you stay on track.
