Staying Hydrated During The Heat

We have all been told that it is important to consume water throughout the day. But have you ever stopped and wondered why that is? Hydration is essential to health because over 50% of the body is made up solely of water. We even need water at the cellular level to assist with chemical transport and survival amongst other things.

Our organs, muscles, and tissues all rely on it to function properly. Water also plays a vital role in temperature regulation and even helps lubricate the joints. It is even important for heart health because it aids the heart in pumping blood throughout the body. Simply put, you cannot survive without it.

Now that the scorching heat of summer is upon us in Brevard County, Advanced Surgical and Weight Loss Institute wants you to stay healthy during the heat. Part of staying healthy is making sure you are consuming around 6 to 8 8oz glasses of water each day. This is by no means a catchall but it is a great place to start if you are looking to beat the heat during the summer months.

However, if you are attempting to lose weight and exercising more, have certain medical conditions, are breastfeeding or pregnant, planning on spending time outdoors, or have been sick with a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting you may need to drink more.

If you aren’t sure whether or not you need to pump up your water intake just take a glance at your urine. Clear or light yellow colored urine is usually indicative of adequate hydration. If yours is an amber or brownish color it is time to increase your water consumption.

Let’s be honest though, sometimes taking in water can be downright boring and even time consuming, but there are ways to make this easier. Try taking a water bottle with you everywhere you go. Doing this will ensure that you always have water around in case you are thirsty and cannot get to a water fountain or beverage station. Set a water schedule. If you have trouble remember to drink just sip a glass when you wake up, before and after lunch, and again during dinner. Create a schedule that will work for you.

If you are going for a workout make sure you drink beforehand and have a bottle ready while you exercise too. You will lose water while you sweat and will need to replenish your stores so have some on hand for afterwards as well. If plain water is not your thing, try adding fresh citrus slices and herbs such as peppermint or spearmint to enhance the flavor.

Staying hydrated is important and you can do it! Try implementing a few of the aforementioned tips to get your intake up to par and remember that the water you are drinking is helping your body function at its best.
