Take Back Control of Your Life

Obesity is a nationwide epidemic of epic proportions. Did you know that 1 out of every 3 Americans is considered obese, meaning they have a Body Mass Index (or BMI) of over 30? Another staggering statistic is that 1 out of every 6 children between the ages of 2 and 19 fall into the obese category with variance depending upon location. Mississippi has the highest rates of childhood obesity while Louisiana has the largest number of obese adults. Colorado boasts the lowest rate of obesity in children and Oregon wins the top prize for their low percentage of adult obesity at just under 10% of the population. Community officials throughout the United States, 70% of them, say that obesity is a top issue where they reside. One encouraging note is that the rates of obesity have fallen slightly in the recent past. However, we are now at risk of raising a generation that will be heavier, suffer more adverse weight-related health effects, and most likely live shorter lives than their parents.

There is a crisis at hand

Obesity is not solely a matter of the number on the scale. It also has far-reaching health implications. Did you know that obese patients have a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, 10 times more likely than others? Diabetes carries with it a multitude of health issues that could affect the eyes, kidneys, heart, and more.

We recently talked National Heart Month here at Advanced Surgical and Weight Loss Institute. Heart disease kills more than 600,000 people a year and obesity is considered a major risk factor. Your chances of developing hypertension, breathing disorders like asthma and sleep apnea, and more rise if you’re obese. Certain cancers are associated with obesity along with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), joint problems, and bone disorders.
